The Flickr Foundation is delighted to welcome the New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroa as one of our new Flickr Commons members. They’ve added 1500 images to our cultural heritage collection, which is approaching two million images.
The museum’s Māori name means the dwelling of Tangaroa based on the ancient Māori and Polynesian understanding of Tangaroa, the creator of the waves and life within the oceans whose breathing makes the tides ebb and flow. They are located in Auckland and have “one of the nation’s most important heritage collections, which covers the breadth of our relationship with the sea.” They’ve also done a number of digitization projects and have created some excellent online resources to assist others with creating digitization projects of their own.
Their curated collections on Flickr Commons fall into four major albums:
The Museum of Wellington City and Sea collection – nearly one thousand images (glass slides, lantern slides, color photographs) of older and newer boats and maritime life in and around Wellington, including many group photos of sailors on board ships.
TSS Marama – a New Zealand hospital ship from World War I, this album contains scrapbook images from and about this ship as it traveled around the world.
Robert Stewart Glass Plates – a collection of family and maritime photos from photographer Robert Stewart
Rangitane – The Rangitane was one of the largest passenger liners sunk in World War II. Some of the survivors were released to the small island of Emirau off the coast of New Guinea. This album documents the return of many of the survivors.
This group has a great team, some fascinating digital images, and we’re looking forward to working with them and giving them another platform to share their cultural heritage.
