Owning the Future: Sustainably Scaling Platform Cooperatives With the Global South

4-6 Nov 2022, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

At the Museu do Amanhã, Rio de Janeiro

One frequently asked question is whether platform co-ops can scale to successfully compete with large tech companies. What does it mean for cooperatives to scale while adhering to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals? Will Distributed Autonomous Organizations, blockchains, and other much-touted distributed technologies help these growth aspirations and address governance issues?

How can we construct a resourceful and assertive cooperative digital economy in the Global South — an economy that has been over-exploited and over-extracted by data and labor colonialism of the Global North? The conference addresses a specific question: How have digital cooperatives scaled their businesses skillfully in agriculture, the care sector, finance, and ride hailing, among other sectors? This debate will serve as a catalyst for the Platform Cooperativism Consortium (PCC) conference, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro in November 2022.
